Building a Productive Home Learning Environment as an Online MBA Student

From calendars to applications to help avoid distractions, there are easy tools available to help create a space that will allow you to thrive.

Studying for an online MBA offers incredible flexibility but comes with its own set of challenges, especially when your classroom doubles as your home. Creating a productive learning environment is key to success.

“A dedicated, distraction-free area is essential to staying productive,” says Mo Moeini, director for the Global Online MBA at Warwick Business School in the UK. “There’s a lot to say about a physically comfortable setup — invest in an ergonomically designed chair, desk and computer stand to reduce strain on your body and eyes.”

Natural light is another important factor. “Setting up in a quiet area with minimal distractions and natural light should help keep you energized as you work,” Moeini adds.

Separation from Personal Space

Naomi Kioi, a 2022 graduate of IE Business School’s Global Online MBA program, underlines the importance of keeping your workspace separate from your personal spaces.

“Keep the workspace out of the bedroom. Let the bedroom be a place for rest and downtime,” she advises. Creating physical boundaries helps reinforce mental boundaries, making it easier to switch between work and relaxation.

Time is the most precious resource for online MBA students, and managing it effectively is important. “Time management and clear boundaries are key when it comes to balancing the demands of home life with MBA studies,” Moeini explains.

He recommends using time-blocking techniques to structure your day, a strategy echoed by Anita Williams Woolley, professor of organizational behavior at Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business in the US.

“Maintaining a clear schedule, even marking the blocks on your calendar, has a lot of benefits,” she says. “It makes it clear to household members when you’re working and when you’re not.”

Apps like Google Calendar and Trello can help you plan your study hours, work commitments and personal time. For those prone to procrastination or perfectionism, Woolley suggests time-boxing tasks.

“Commit to doing as much as you can within the dedicated time and moving on,” she explains. “This helps contain the tendency to continue to work on something beyond the point that it is useful or productive.”

Tools to Avoid Distraction

Digital distractions can derail even the most determined learner. Moeini at Warwick suggests tools like Freedom or StayFocusd to block social media and other interruptions during study hours.

For accountability, consider joining study groups or sharing your goals with peers. Moeini recommends using platforms like Microsoft Teams or WhatsApp for group discussions. “Fostering accountability through peer groups can motivate you to stick to your schedule,” he says.

Kioi at IE in Spain adds: “Update your calendar with each project, assignment, study time and personal commitments. Your calendar will be your guide to ensure efficiency.”

Flexibility is one of the biggest advantages of an online MBA, but it also requires adaptability. “Sometimes, early morning is best for school, and the afternoon is best for work,” Kioi shares. “Find your rhythm each day and be open to switching it up depending on the headspace needed.”

Even as you adapt, don’t forget to set boundaries. “Inform family and friends about the demands of the MBA,” Kioi advises. “Carve out time for study daily and let them know those hours are for study.”

Giving Yourself a Break

Productivity isn’t just about how much time you spend at your desk — it’s also about taking care of your mind and body. “Rest is the fuel for productivity,” says Kioi. She suggests making physical exercise a non-negotiable part of your day and finding time for mindfulness practices.

Moeini echoes the importance of breaks, recommending students incorporate regular pauses to recharge. Many universities, including Warwick, offer online well-being support services with sessions on managing anxiety or boosting productivity.

Having the right tools can make or break your learning experience. “Invest in a good, reliable internet plan,” says Woolley. She also advises equipping your computer with quality headphones and a backup microphone to avoid disruptions during classes or group meetings.

For students who thrive on variety, Woolley suggests mixing up your study locations. “Having different locations can facilitate memory development for material due to associations with the location. Just make sure each location is relatively distraction-free,.” he says.

Online learning can feel isolating, but involving your community can make a big difference. “Share the progress, milestones, successes and challenges faced each day,” Kioi says. “Include your community in your journey — it can be lonely if you try to go at it alone.”

Moeini underlines the importance of collaboration through interactive technologies like SmartStage. These tools foster a sense of community by keeping students connected with peers and faculty, no matter where they are.

Ultimately, your success as an online MBA student depends on finding a setup and routine that works for you. As Moeini puts it, “There’s no one-size-fits-all approach. You need to find what works for your setup.”
