Best program in terms of ROI?

Hi forum,

I'm a South American currently looking into pursuing an online MBA to hopefully be able to pivot to Finance and aspire to roles abroad in an English speaking country (all options are open: Canada, UK, OZ, etc.).

Relocating for my studies is not currently an option, as I need to keep working in parallel. Looking specifically at ROI, which would you say are the best online programs? I've looked in depth at IE Business School, Warwick and FIA Business School (Brazil).

Would pursuing an online MBA from an accredited institution help me aspire to positions abroad?

I appreciate your help!

Best,
Fernando

For career switching, especially into finance, full-time MiF and MBA programs generally produce better outcomes than online MBAs. This reflects employers' preferences and the importance of immersive learning, networking, and recruitment opportunities. While online MBAs from strong schools like IE and Warwick offer excellent education, they rarely match full-time programs' placement rates for career switchers. Fullt-ime MiF degrees typically cost less than MBAs and have higher placement.
The schools you mentioned vary significantly in their international recognition and finance placement:
--> IE has strong finance credentials and good European recognition
--> Warwick places well in the UK financial sector
--> FIA, while respected in Brazil, has limited international recognition

If your primary goal is working abroad in finance, a full-time MiF or MBA in your target country will likely generate higher ROI despite the higher initial cost. Here's why:
--> Direct access to local finance recruiting
--> Building an in-country professional network
--> Local work authorization (many countries offer post-study work visas to on-campus students but not to online alumni)
--> Stronger signal to employers about commitment to the market

Consider that finance roles often require market-specific knowledge and certifications. Time spent in-country during a full-time program helps develop these competencies.
If online is your only option now, I'd recommend:
--> Focus on programs with strong finance curricula and international accreditation
--> Target schools with recognized brands in your preferred destinations
--> Plan to supplement a MiF or MBA with relevant finance certifications, perhaps the CFA
--> Build international connections through professional associations

This is very valuable information, Duncan. Thank you.

I often hear people saying that nowadays online MBAs are regarded almost equally as on-campus ones but there was always a suspicion in me that this couldn't really be the case. Not at least in all regards.

I see then that I'm left with two options: to study an MBA locally, in-person; or to save money to study abroad as a more long-term plan (which seems to be the much better option).

I'll look a bit more into programs abroad and financing options (as well as visa possibilities). I hadn't really considered this seriously given all the obstacles as a South American (weak currency, amongst others), but if the ROI is high, then it's of course very much worth it.

The data consistently shows that graduates from full-time finance-focused programs in target countries achieve much better outcomes in finance roles compared to online MBA graduates. This is reflected in both placement rates and starting salaries.
Looking at the Financial Times rankings, Masters in Finance graduates often match or exceed MBA salaries in finance roles, despite the programs typically costing 50-70% less than MBAs. The post-study work rights are usually identical.
Beyond the traditional English-speaking destinations, several European schools offer strong Masters in Finance programs in English, with excellent placement into international finance. Schools like HEC Paris, ESCP, Bocconi and Nova place graduates globally and their fees are often much lower than UK/US programs. Many of their graduates use these degrees as stepping stones to roles in London, New York, Toronto and other major finance centers.
So, while a local MBA would provide a good education, it may not be the most effective path to your goals. A full-time specialized finance degree, perhaps starting in continental Europe to manage costs, would likely offer better value and stronger career outcomes for entering international finance.

Yes an accredited online MBA can help, but its impact on international mobility is limited compared with on-campus programs; ROI depends on employer perception, alumni/network access, and concrete career-services outcomes.

Hey Fernando, for international ROI and mobility, I’d probably choose Warwick or IE over FIA. Their global recognition and alumni networks are stronger, especially for English-speaking markets. An online MBA can help abroad, but networking, finance-related experience, and certifications will still play a huge role in successfully pivoting into finance.
