International Study trip

georgep

Hi,
In my Durham Global MBA, we have been offered 8 days International Study trip for the next term.
This includes field trips, company visits and attending classes at local business schools, etc

The choices are ..

1. China - Sun Yat Sen University and Central University of Finance and Economics
2. Germany - European Business School

As I have spent most of my life in Europe, I would like to see how business works in China.
But I am not sure how useful an International study trip is.

Have you been to any International Study trips as part of your MBA? How was it? Worth going?

Thanks.

Hi George,

Well, I think you need to look closely at what actually happens on the trip. At LBS, for example, I did two field trips, to Ukraine and to South Africa. In both we were working on in-company projects, working in teams and reporting to top management with faculty support. In Kiev, we had the support of translators and advisors from the local business school.

In contrast, I've come across one French school where the international trip involved touring French businesses in a Chinese city: most of those were factory tours and involved no real work in or for a company: you just got brochure-level insight. In another school, the field trip involved going with European professors to a Chinese city and, without having any real contact with companies, to develop market entry projects for firms that they axctually didn't have access to.

In the middle I'd put the 'doing business in...' courses, where a local partner outlines the cultural and other barriers to entry.
